Mumbai, India

The Aasha Foundation provide provides deep enrichment support for formerly destitute, neglected and abandoned girls in India who live in a permanent shelter home residence in Mumbai’s Dharavi slum. Our comprehensive social, health, recreational and educational programs are designed to help girls and young women pursue productive, independent lives in their futures. Our programs focus on exposure and integration, and on ensuring that girls from complicated backgrounds can enjoy the same kinds of experiences as their middle-class and upper-middle-class peers. We find this helps to reduce their own internal perceptions of their potential as well as external perceptions. Our students are confident well adjusted young women who speak English, have excellent computer skills and enjoy a range of extracurricular activities. Our first two students are now working full-time and living independently, while 7 others are attending degree universities setting the standard for the girls who will follow them. They are well-integrated students on track to achieve the futures of their dreams.
