Utilizing a multifaceted approach to village development,the Agency for Non Konventional Urban Rural Initiatives (ANKURI) empowers rural women through income generation, alleviation of poverty and promotion of health, education and the full participation of women and children in Uttrakhand society. Ankuri’s vision entails :

  • Construction of a building for the Literacy Center and expansion to the remote regions of Kimari and Rikholi.
  • Courses in adult literacy and vocational skill upgrading.
  • Expansion the voluntourism program to bring fresh ideas and crucial funding, which supports all of Ankuri’s programs.
  • Engagement with the local government school in a public-private partnership to improve the standard of education for children in the community

Qualifications 

ANKURI relies upon the work and innovation of volunteers and interns to continue our vision and growth as an organization. We offer internship positions to current undergraduate students and recent college graduates who commit three weeks to two months while our volunteer positions are open for all to apply for shorter stays

Responsibilities 

Literacy Center:
For teachers, education majors, and those passionate about working with children, you will be responsible for daily lesson planning (math and/or English), applying creative teaching and incorporating games or activities for students ages 6 – 14.

Knitting Center:
For anyone with experience, knowledge, and curiosity in fashion, management, or excel familiarity with fabric work and knitting patterns is preferred. If you have a creative spirit we welcome contributions to our design team.

Social Media:
For anyone who is passionate about computers, communication, or photography, you will be responsible for updating the website and the Facebook page with your projects and interviews of the knitters.

Stipend

As ANKURI does not pay its interns, it relies on the generous funds of private donors and university sponsors. Currently, we have partnerships with University of Michigan, Clark University, and Princeton University but are always looking forward to more. ANKURI will coordinate for housing of the volunteers.
