The Mikey Medium English School was founded in 2008 by Mike Church ( an American bicycling through Nepal) and Bal Bhat, the current Director. It is a small (200 student) non-profit elementary school focused on providing a safe and quality educational experience for marginalized children from rural Nepal. Interns at our school are welcome to teach our English classes, any cultural arts activities, personal health education or computer skills. Because of previous volunteer experiences at Mikey Medium English School, the children and teachers are conversant in English and delighted to embrace visitors.

The Mikey Medium English School is registered as a non-profit 501 C3 under it’s parent organization- Grassroots Education Nepal. This very small organization is supported by volunteers located in the Annapolis, Maryland area. We have a number of volunteers willing to share their experiences with prospective volunteers. Please feel free to contact us at 410-721-5944. There is a complete application on our website: http://grassrootseducationnepal.com/get-involved/volunteer/

Qualifications

Grassroots Education Nepal -a chance to make a difference in rural Nepal

Both undergraduates or graduates are welcome. Interns do not need to be in the field of education, but it is helpful. Social workers and people interested in public health are also welcome. Business management training is an area of need. Balraj Bhat, the Mikey Medium English School Director, speaks excellent English, as do many of the staff and children, so the Nepali language is not a requirement – but fun to learn. It is related to Hindi. As this area of Nepal is underdeveloped, interns should expect only basic accommodations. An experience working with children is helpful and background references are required.

Responsibilities

Interns are expected to elementary teach classes in English, any of the cultural arts, health education and/or computer literacy. They may follow the textbook curriculum, or create their own lessons. The Mikey Medium English School staff will assist the interns. Materials of instruction are very limited, so interns should be prepared to bring school supplies with them. Our school is located very near Bardia National Park, so opportunities to explore the area are encouraged.

Stipend

This organization is able to offer housing through a homestay, meals, and cultural excursions for a low fee.
