Pema has been working in the field of heritage conservation since her first appointment as an architect with the Department of Culture, Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan in 2009. She completed her undergraduate studies with a Bachelor of Architecture from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi India, and pursued a Master in Conservation studies from the University of York, United Kingdom in 2015. Over the period of more than a decade working on heritage conservation in Bhutan, she was fortunate to get the opportunity to work on numerous important heritage conservation projects which gave her a range of learning experiences. Currently, she is working as the Chief Conservation Architect and is responsible for overseeing 13 national-scale heritage conservation and managing and supervising 39 professionals working in the field of heritage conservation. There has always been a subconscious interest in the field of conservation since her undergraduate as she was able to pursue an elective in conservation during her final year in B.Arch. She is passionate about the work she is doing, and that has led to the successful completion of several conservation projects.
Marvi Mazhar is an architect and researcher, her practice combines visual culture, spatial advocacy and interventions. Recently completed her Masters (MA RA) at Goldsmiths, University of London (2021) and in 2022 started teaching at Indus Valley School of Architecture (IVSAA) M.Phil Program, Pedagogies of Place. Her present ongoing research focuses upon the representation and production of Karachi’s Urban Coastal Periphery, and its Ecology. Marvi Mazhar served as Director at Peace Niche (T2F) and is the co-founder of (ADRL) The Architectural Design Research Lab, housed within, and affiliated with, the Department of Architecture at the Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture-a research laboratory devoted to projects within the fields of architecture and urban social design. She was the Project Manager of National History Museum (Lahore, Pakistan), conceptualized by The Citizens Archive of Pakistan. In 2018 she was appointed as advisor to the Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training, and National History & Literary Heritage Division. In 2021, Sindh High Court appointed Mazhar as amicus curiae as her ongoing research on ‘Land reclamation and safeguarding coastal ecology’ of urban Karachi was an important research component. Mazhar is co-curating the exhibition and co-editing the book on ‘Yasmeen Lari. Architecture for the Future’ with Angelika Fitz (Director of the Az W, the Austrian Architecture Museum in Vienna), and Prof. Elke Krasny (Head of the Art and Education Program at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna) for Architekturzentrum Wien, published by MIT Press, 2023.
