A CoSTAR Public Talk

The identification of pigments in artworks sheds light on the long history of color. From detailed analysis, we investigate where the trade of raw materials and finished products occurred and influenced art making. We discover when new pigments were introduced and how they were used by painters. We learn how pigments change over time and how this can affect our interpretation of painted works. This talk will present an overview of the history of color as revealed using chemical analysis. Using case studies, analytical findings will be examined in the context of our current understanding of the use of pigments.
