Global engagement in Afghanistan had long focused on promoting women’s rights and participation that led to major achievements in the two decades since 2001. Women are considered central to a country’s peace, stability, growth, and development. All those gains are being erased by the Taliban regime, considered to be the worst political outcome for women and girls in the country. Women are facing new threats and renewed abuses, despite commitments by the Taliban to uphold their rights.
Eight months into Taliban rule, this Davis Center event will consider the pressing risks faced by Afghan women and girls and discuss policy options. What challenges do they face under the Taliban regime? What does this mean for future generations?
