Atiyab Sultan’s research focuses on historical and empirical questions of governance, institutions, and economic development in South Asia. She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and is the author of A Broken Record: Institutions, Community and Development in Pakistan (Cambridge University Press, 2022), as well as articles in leading journals including Modern Asian Studies. As an Associate at the Mittal Institute, she will develop research and teaching materials on the inner life of the state in South Asia, with particular attention to ethical decision-making, training gaps, and local and regional strategies of development in an age of climate change.
She has also completed several public-facing works of scholarship, including a co-edited Gazetteer of the Lahore District (2022) and a co-authored biography, Endgame of Empire: Sultan Khan, Asia’s First Grandmaster (Fordham University Press, 2026).
