Call for Proposals

Descriptions of Open Call Panels

We are pleased to announce that the eighteenth biennial meeting of the American Council for Southern Asian Art (ACSAA) will be co-hosted by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Harvard University, October 12 to 15th, 2017.

ACSAA symposia occur in alternating years, and serve as opportunities to meet colleagues, reconnect with mentors and graduate school cohorts, and share one’s current research with the field. From senior scholars to graduate students, ACSAA symposia are one of the primary ways ACSAA members gather and support one another, share ideas in collegial environment, and participate in the ACSAA community.

In the second round, we invite proposals for individual papers that reflect original and/or new research in South (including Himalayan) and Southeast Asian art history. The committee is particularly interested in seeing proposals in the areas that have been underrepresented in recent symposia, i.e. Southeast Asia and Buddhist art. There are two categories for individual paper submission: 1) a themed panel (four open-call thematic panels were selected during the first round) and 2) an individual papers session. Prospective participants are encouraged to review these panel proposals to determine whether their topics may fit one of these panels. Information regarding the themed panels will become available during the first week of February and will be circulated via e-mail circulars and on the symposium website ( Please note that proposals submitted to a themed panel should be made directly to the chair(s) of each panel, as they will be evaluated and selected by the chairs. All presenters and panel chairs must be ACSAA members in good standing.

A paper proposal should be in the format of a 250-word abstract and submitted along with a one-page CV. If proposing to a panel, please include a brief letter explaining the proposed paper’s relevance and the speaker’s interest in the panel’s topic.

Selection committee: Jinah Kim, Laura Weinstein, Susan Bean, Ajay Sinha
