Panel Proposals Due: December 5, 2016

We are pleased to announce that the eighteenth biennial meeting of the American Council for Southern Asian Art (ACSAA) will be co-hosted by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Harvard University, October 12 to 15th, 2017.

ACSAA symposia occur in alternating years, and serve as opportunities to meet colleagues, reconnect with mentors and graduate school cohorts, and share one’s current research with the field. From senior scholars to graduate students, ACSAA symposia are one of the primary ways ACSAA members gather and support one another, share ideas in collegial environment, and participate in the ACSAA community.

In the first round, we invite proposals for panels that are either pre-formed or open, including experimental panel formats (e.g. PechaKucha style presentations) that reflect original and/or new research in South and Southeast Asian art history. All members are welcome to propose ideas for new panels or panel formats, even if he or she presented a paper at ACSAA XVII.  Individual paper submission will be due in the second round in March 2017. All presenters and panel chairs must be ACSAA members in good standing.

We encourage submissions of panels or papers that explore or draw inspiration from the scholarly work of M.A. Dhaky or Pramod Chanda, both of whom passed away recently.  We also encourage proposals that explore historiographical issues to celebrate the historical setting of the symposium in the centennial year of Coomaraswamy’s arrival as the first curator of Indian art in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Panel proposals should be in the format of a 250-word abstract explaining the panel concept. Pre-formed panel proposals should also include a 250-abstract of each paper, along with a one-page CV for the panel chair and each presenter.

Selection committee: Jinah Kim, Laura Weinstein, Susan Bean, Ajay Sinha
