“Emergent Practices in South Asia” will convene young practitioners that have displayed rigorous engagement in the making of architecture, landscape, and interventions in the public realm in response to the spectrum of issues that societies in transition experience. This lecture series also sets off the broader project to research, document, and create conversations around Architecture in South Asia and the emergent models of practice.

Bhumiputra
Alok Shetty (born July 21, 1986) is Principal Architect of Bhumiputra Architecture, an internationally acclaimed architecture and urban design firm based in Bangalore City. Operating across many scales, Bhumiputra Architecture consistently works towards new built environments that improve the quality of life in emerging economies. He has an undergraduate architecture degree from RV School of architecture in Bangalore, India. He later pursued his Masters’ degree in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in New York where he was the youngest recipient of the Lucille Smyser-Lowenfish Memorial Award for Design Excellence. Shortly after his graduation from Columbia University, Alok went on to work as a project architect under Joshua Prince-Ramus at REX architecture (previously OMA) in New York City. He returned to India in 2013 when he formally setup Bhumiputra Architecture. Alok is a two-time Forbes 30 under 30 honoree (India and Asia), INK Fellow, TIME Next Generation Leader, National Geographic Future Leader and World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. He has presented Bhumiputra’s work to world leaders including President Barack Obama & Shinzo Abe at APEC Summit, Philippines and Davos, Switzerland.

Recently, Alok was named a Stanford University and Oxford University Scholar for his work in low cost, high impact urban interventions for underprivileged communities across India. The work of Bhumiputra Architecture has been featured by VICE, BBC, TIME magazine, FORBES magazine, National Geographic, VERVE, ELLE, Complex and various other eminent publications nationally and internationally. Bhumiputra has successfully won many international & national competitions and is currently working on high impact, special interest projects like Shree Jagannatha Heritage Corridor in Puri, Sun Temple redevelopment in Konark, Odisha, the master planning, conservation and redevelopment of Jog Falls in Karnataka – one the largest single plunge waterfalls in Asia. And most recently, Bhumiputra have been appointed the chief architects for OLA electric, master planning their 3000 acre EV Hub in Pochampalli, Tamil Nadu.

Dehsar Works
Rashed H. Chowdhury is an Architect, Designer and Educator based in Dhaka. He is the principal of DEHSAR WORKS, an architectural studio and founding partner of ‘LOUDWORKS’ a visual identity design company And ‘Workshop ltd’ a  design built company. After his graduation from ‘Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology’ (BUET), he worked as a researcher on sustainable solutions at ‘GRACE’ (green architectural cell) and as a full time lecturer at the ‘University of Asia Pacific’. In 2015 he left full time teaching to pursue his idea for a multidisciplinary design platform . His ventures have since received  recognition from home and abroad and have won a few major competitions. Currently the studio operates with a vibrant juxtaposition of ideators, working across disciplines to bring out contextual solutions.
