This seminar will examine India’s presence in the Indo-Pacific littoral by placing India within the frame of a globalized history spanning the geographic spaces of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The bulk of India’s commercial and cultural linkages had been within the Indo-Pacific region until this was interrupted by colonialism; in recent times there have been attempts to restore those linkages even as the Indo-Pacific region itself has grown in global economic and geostrategic significance. The panel discussion will center on how India has navigated the region’s geopolitical currents over the last 75 years, since it attained Independence in 1947, and the opportunities as well as obstacles likely to come its way in the near future.
