Join us for a presentation by Professor Vishal Khandelwal on his current book manuscript, titled “Crafted Visions: India and the Values of Design, 1955-1985.” The manuscript reconstructs a history of design education and practice in postcolonial India through the archives and works of specific product designers, artists, graphic designers, photographers, architects, bureaucrats, craftspeople, and textile designers, all of whom were affiliated with the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad (estb. 1961) during the academy’s first few decades in operation. Following this presentation, Professor Suchitra Balasubrahmanyan will offer a response and share her on-going research on design and crafts history.
