Join us for a webinar on “The Purchaser-Provider Split and the Public Sector” organised jointly by The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute at Harvard University and Lancet Citizens’ Commission on Reimagining India’s Health System. The public sector has a vital role in delivering healthcare services in India. Resources need to be allocated efficiently and in a manner that is responsive to the needs of the people. Unlike the current detailed line-by-line budget-based approaches, which are focused on tightly controlling the supply of inputs, this webinar will discuss a reform option that seeks to combine a higher degree of trust and autonomy offered to health facilities with greater accountability for outcomes, the “purchaser-provider split.” Indian states that choose to pursue this reform could form multiple Integrated Delivery Systems (IDS) offering primary care and secondary care to defined populations, with each IDS being paid by an independent state-level purchaser through reformed payment methods. We will engage with experts to explore and understand this reform, the global evidence of its impact, and whether it is desirable and feasible in the context of different Indian states.
