A 2018 national report on tribal health in India draws attention to the fact that the health conditions, health status and access to health care of the approximately 104 million tribals in India, though improving over the years, remain the poorest among all social groups. To actualize aspirations for universal health care in India, it is imperative to pay close attention to the social and cultural realities in which tribal communities live and to design the health system with their participation such that it builds on their strengths and needs.
