Join us for a talk with Dan Slater on “Mischief of the Franchise: The Grant of Universal Suffrage in British Ceylon (Sri Lanka), 1927-28.” What prompted a white ruling elite to grant universal suffrage to a population of color for the very first time in modern history? This presentation discusses the surprising and puzzling decision by the colonial Donoughmore Commission to extend the franchise in British Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) in 1927-28, offering a novel account for both why and how suffrage expansion unfolds in the absence of either elite or popular pressures to expand voting rights.

Dr. Rose Sebastian’s postdoctoral project proposes to analyze the national science museums in independent India as sites of display and dissemination of a distinctively postcolonial policy and culture of science. This interdisciplinary project aspires to bring together the analytical approaches of Cultural Studies and Science and Technology Studies (STS). It extends the concepts of postcolonial hybridity and ambivalence to cultures of science, and analyzes the co-production of the technoscientific and the political in postcolonial India from an STS framework.

Violence against children is pervasive, but not inevitable. It is preventable. Like pervasive diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, we can diagnose and document violence against children, treat it and ultimately eradicate it. This topic will be the focus of a wide-ranging discussion that marks the publication of an important new book, Protecting the World’s Children: Public Health, Human Rights, Capabilities, co-edited by FXB Senior Fellow Susan Bissell and A.K. Shiva Kumar. The book includes the work of leading experts on the multi-faceted threats and violations facing today’s children. Panelists will engage with several key child protection issues and discuss solutions that demand urgent attention and action.
