The Mittal Institute’s annual “Welcome Back” mixer, held on September 9, brought together students, faculty, and affiliates from across Harvard for an evening of connection, conversation, and community, marking the start of a new academic year with shared purpose and enthusiasm.

The evening began with a warm welcome from Diana L. Eck, Professor of Comparative Religion and Indian Studies, Emerita, Frederic Wertham Research Professor of Law and Psychiatry in Society, and the Mittal Institute’s new Faculty Director. She reflected on the Institute’s legacy of engagement with South Asia and shared her vision for strengthening its role in the years to come.

Following her address, Hitesh Hathi, the institute’s executive director, introduced the Mittal Institute’s mission and extended an invitation for students and faculty to participate in its events, fellowships, and programs throughout the year.

Faculty—including (clockwise), Prof. Richard Wolf, Prof. Jinah Kim, Prof. Venkatesh Murthy, and Prof. Martha Selby— from across the University then took the floor to briefly talk about their research and upcoming courses, offering a window into the range of South Asia–focused scholarship happening on campus.

Student organizations set up tables in the Concourse showcasing their work. Representatives shared their initiatives, activities, major events, and opportunities for collaboration.

At the Mittal Institute’s own table, students found details on upcoming fall events, grant opportunities, and ways to stay connected with the Institute’s vibrant programming—highlighting its role as a hub for South Asia at Harvard.

The evening concluded over a shared South Asian meal, where conversations flowed easily and new connections formed. It was a vibrant reminder of the diversity of Harvard’s community and the shared commitment to deepening engagement with South Asia.
