Student voices: Tiger reserves and nature preserves
During winter session, Mei Yin Wu, Harvard College ’17, interned at Wildlife Conservation Trust in Mumbai, which currently works with over 110 national parks and sanctuaries in India, covering tiger reserves and nature preserves.
International Photo Contest Winners
Congratulations to Harvard College students Bharath Venkatesh ’17 and Marisa Houlahan ’17, who were chosen by SAI as winners of the Office of International Education’s Annual International Photo Contest for their photos taken in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
SAI to host weekly seminar series on Partition of British India
The weekly seminars, starting February 1, will explore issues that have often been ignored in the context of the Partition as well as discuss their relevance and impact today, both in South Asia and in other parts of the world.
Research Assistant needed: South and Southeast Asian Art
Professor Jinah Kim (History of Art & Architecture) is looking for a Research Assistant to help her with various research projects, which includes an exhibition on Nepalese Buddhist art, a visual database project, a bibliographic project on the history of Indian painting, and a symposium on South and Southeast Asian Art.
A fruitful trip to India
Naren Tallapragada, Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Francesco Wiedemann, MIT, were the inaugural winners of SAI’s 2016 Seed for Change Competition for their venture gomango, which provides low-cost refrigerated transport to food producers in India. They spent December in India.

Spring 2017 South Asia courses at Harvard
Harvard will offer many courses in the upcoming semester with content related to South Asia, covering topics such as Himalayan art, Asian diasporas, capitalism and cosmology, Ismaili history and culture, and much more.

“It takes a greater-than-normal effort of the imagination to travel from a manor house library on a Scottish island to a desert outpost in the Deccan,” writes Joshua Ehrlich, PhD candidate in history, who conducted archival research over the summer in the UK for his dissertation on the East India Company.

“Nothing can quite match the thrill of stumbling across a century-old document filled with often-juicy details of a disputed claim of a princely state,” writes Priyasha Saksena, SJD Candidate, Harvard Law School, who spent the summer conducting research for her doctoral dissertation on the relationship between international law and empire.
2017 Winter Grant Recipients
SAI has awarded grants to 15 students who will travel to India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Pakistan for research and internships.
Student voices: Teaching history through empathy
Asad Liaqat, SAI Graduate Associate, spent the summer working with The History Project in Lahore, Pakistan. He evaluated workshops aimed at improving critical thinking and increasing empathy in schoolchildren in Pakistan and India, especially towards historical narratives.
